February 2008 / Swap Meet Edition

ATTEND THE SWAP MEET (Saturday, March 1st)

The annual Swap Meet is being held Saturday, March 1st, from 1:00pm to 2:30pm in the Esplanade Room (above the rink, east-end) of the Harry Jerome Arena. Benefit from our members' growth by buying outgrown equipment at bargain prices. It's amazing how fast the merchandise sells, so don't be disappointed. Get there early!

For those of you who don't find what you're looking for, or who prefer new equipment, this is the perfect time to take advantage of Time Out Sports' NSIHL weekend sale. Please click on the Weekend Sale Flyer link below.

2007 TAX RECEIPTS SENT

If you were a member of the league in 2007, you should have received your official tax receipt from the NSIHL in a separate email sent this past Wednesday. You should be able to apply this tax receipt for your 2007 personal income tax filing re: the new federal fitness tax credit.

We did not send receipts for players born before January 1, 1991 as they are not eligible for the fitness tax credit. We also excluded players whose registration fees were fully refunded (typically full-time goalies who qualified for the refund in the Squirt, Peewee and Bantam age divisions.) For those of you who received the $80 family discount for registering three or more children in the league, we split that $80 evenly amongst your registered children.

If you didn't receive your tax receipt, please send an email to Scott Cronshaw at stating your child's name and birthdate and request that the receipt be sent again. We will not be issuing hard-copy receipts, so you will need to print them out.

BEWARE COMPOSITE STICKS!

A tip picked up while visiting Time Out Sports (NSIHL sponsor) recently: "Please be aware that all composite sticks are not warranted for inline hockey as they are designed for play on an ice surface, not a floor surface."

NSIHL's TOP 10 LIST

Why inline hockey* is better than ice hockey (* based on the Recreational rules of the NSIHL):

10. Wide-open, fast-paced, 4-on-4 on the floor action
9.   No offsides - better flow to the game
8.   No icing - more passing
7.   No hitting - little need for shoulder pads
6.   Parents stay warm in the stands
5.   Emphasis on fun over winning
4.   More offense - high-scoring games
3.   Lighter puck - blocked shots don't hurt (as much...)
2.   Penalty shots instead of man-advantage

...and the #1 reason why inline hockey is better than ice hockey...

1.   No Zamboni!
